F – Figuring It All Out

Can you reach a plateau after losing just 8 pounds?  I sure as hell hope not, or this will very a long struggle indeed.  I know it seems like I have only been at this for a very short time, but I have really been working on this weight-loss program for about 3-4 weeks.  Like I said, in yesterday’s post, I thought I should start this whole weight loss journey several weeks before I began blogging about it, because I didn’t want to be an epic failure publicly (I know it is not the most positive way to approach something, but I am a realist, and historically I have not been very successful).

My sons berate me for weighing myself all the time.  I can’t help myself, I am scientific by nature, I need numbers.  So, yes, it might be overkill, me weighing myself every time I pee, but there you are.  They say (my sons), that there is SO much more to weight loss, than what is seen on the scale, because there are all kinds of tiny little balancing processes going on in your body, things we don’t really understand.  They also say, that genetically (and this has been proven through the DNA testing I did some time ago), we as a family have the propensity to build muscle mass quite quickly – hence my enormous biceps after only swimming for about 3 weeks.

Based on the above, I decided to do some follow-up body measurements.  I measured myself at the beginning of my weight loss journey and documented all the measurements in my little journal I am keeping.  I was absolutely horrified at the results, I had no idea I had become so enormous, but I am not going to dwell on that, I will focus only on the improvement. And to my surprise and delight, I have lost inches, much more than I thought was possible in such a short amount of time. Here are the results:

  • Abdomen – the largest area on my stomach – 2 inches lost
  • Hips – 2.5 inches lost
  • Thighs – 0.5 inches lost.

That’s in 3 weeks of swimming 3-4 times a week, reducing my caloric intake, eating better and increasing my water intake.

My sons are smart boys, they know about this stuff, they live this and have lived through this process I am presently going through, themselves. They have both lost an enormous amount of weight, together they have lost my entire body weight. Tomorrow, I will be posting and update on Getting the Gains (Part 2) – a story about my boys and their transformations.

So, they are right – there is more to weight-loss than the numbers that appear on the scale.  Good lesson learned.

  1. You’re sons are right. Muscle weighs more than fat so constantly weighing yourself has a negative effect. Do the other stuff if you must although just looking in the mirror and having to buy new clothes is probably all you need to do girl. Well done and keep going.
By the way the slug deterrent failed miserably and I’m still in the dog house for PILs hostas getting eaten!
